Many brands focus on oil quality at purchase, then treat filling as simply pouring liquid into a bottle. In reality, moving argan oil from a drum or bulk container into bottles is the moment it meets air, light, moisture, hands and equipment all at once. This guide explains how to repack bulk argan oil so you keep the quality you paid for.
Why filling is a sensitive stage
Argan oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, which react to oxygen, heat and light. While the original container stays sealed, exposure is limited. Once opened, air reaches the oil, and the larger the headspace, the higher the risk. A few drops of water or residue of old oil in a tool is enough to contaminate a batch.
So treat filling as its own production step with a written procedure. To recognise early oxidation, read our guide to argan oil oxidation signs.
Before opening the drum
- Work area: clean, dry, away from direct sun, dust and heat.
- Equipment: funnels, hoses and vessels in stainless steel or another material suitable for food or cosmetic contact, with no leftover odour.
- Bottles and closures: fully dry and tested beforehand for compatibility with the oil.
- Staff: clean hands or gloves, hair covering, no food or drink in the area.
- Paperwork: certificate of analysis, batch number and receiving sheet at hand.
If equipment was washed with water, let it dry completely. Water is the first enemy of a pure oil.
The repacking steps
- Let the drum rest after transport at room temperature so it flows easily without heating.
- Inspect before opening: seal condition, batch number, then compare smell and colour with the reference sample.
- Keep it open as briefly as possible: have everything ready first.
- Transfer gently along the vessel wall to avoid foam and trapped air.
- Filter if needed with a suitable filter when sediment appears after shipping.
- Minimise headspace in each bottle. Some workshops use an inert gas such as nitrogen; ask your supplier whether that is possible.
- Close at once and record the batch number.
- Store away from light and heat, and log the remaining quantity and the date the drum was opened.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Possible effect | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Damp or poorly cleaned tools | Contamination, faster ageing | Full drying, cleaning to a written procedure |
| Drum left open for hours | More oxygen and dust exposure | Prepare everything before opening |
| Mixing lots without a record | Lost traceability | Fill lot by lot and document |
| Clear bottles under strong light | Light affects the oil | Dark bottles, shaded storage |
| Heating oil to speed flow | Altered smell, faster oxidation | Wait for room temperature |
Fill by weight, not volume
Many manufacturers fill by weight on a regularly calibrated scale, because density shifts slightly with temperature. Vegetable oils generally sit around 0.91-0.92 g/ml, but use the figure in your batch's technical data sheet. Also set the acceptable tolerance between declared and actual volume according to your target market's rules.
Test compatibility before large runs
Before filling thousands of bottles, test a sample dropper, pump and cap with the same oil for several weeks, watching for leaks and any change in smell or gasket condition.
What to record
- Source batch number, receiving and opening dates.
- Number of bottles filled, size, date, operator.
- Sensory check result before transfer.
- Remaining quantity and how the drum was resealed.
- A retention sample from each filling batch.
FAQ
Should I repack myself or let the factory do it?
Both work. Doing it yourself gives flexibility but needs a clean space, equipment, training and documentation. Factory filling suits larger volumes.
How long can a drum stay open?
There is no universal figure: it depends on temperature, storage and headspace. Open it as few times as possible and decant small quantities into smaller containers.
Is filtering always necessary?
No. If the oil arrives clear and uniform it may not be. When sediment appears, a suitable filter is advisable, remembering that every extra step adds air contact.
Can I combine leftovers from two drums?
Better not to. If unavoidable, record both batches and confirm they match sensorially and on their certificates.
