Argan oil looks like a simple liquid in the bottle, but its texture changes with temperature, and that directly affects filling accuracy on the line. If you are ordering a private label batch, it helps to understand how viscosity responds to heat, why some manufacturers prefer filling by weight, and which questions to ask before production.
What viscosity is and why it matters
Viscosity is a liquid's resistance to flow. A more viscous oil flows slowly and leaves more film on the bottle wall and the filling nozzle, while a thinner oil flows faster. In automatic filling this shows up as pumping speed, residue in the nozzle and the risk of dripping after each dose. If filling varies from bottle to bottle, customers notice it as different oil levels in clear glass or as short net content.
Temperature is the main factor
Vegetable oils generally become less viscous as they warm and more viscous as they cool, and argan oil follows that rule. Oil stored in a cool warehouse does not flow like the same oil on a hot summer day. We do not give specific viscosity or temperature figures because they vary with the batch and storage; the reference is the technical data sheet for the batch. For these documents see our guide to the TDS and SDS.
It is best to fill in a room with stable temperature and let the oil equilibrate before dosing. Heating the oil strongly to make it flow is not an acceptable shortcut, because it exposes the oil to oxidation.
Volume or weight?
| Method | Principle | Strengths | Watch points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume filling | Machine dispenses a fixed volume | Fast, suited to automatic lines | Volume shifts with temperature and air bubbles, so actual weight can vary |
| Weight filling | Each bottle is weighed | More accurate real content, unaffected by expansion | Slower, needs a calibrated scale |
Net content is usually declared in millilitres on the label, while control may be done by weight. Converting between them depends on oil density, typically around 0.91 to 0.92 g/ml but variable, so ask the factory for the value of your batch. For the bottles-to-weight calculation, see our argan oil quantity guide.
Common sources of error
- Temperature change across the day: injected volume shifts slightly, so periodic checks are needed.
- Air bubbles: caused by fast pumping or transfers, they reduce actual content.
- Nozzle drip: soils the neck, skews weight and spoils appearance.
- Narrow bottle neck: slows flow and raises overflow risk.
- Residue in lines: poor cleaning between batches can mix in leftovers.
How the factory verifies accuracy
- Setup before the batch: trial bottles with weight or volume checks.
- Sampling during production: periodic weighing and recording.
- Scale calibration: on a documented schedule.
- Tolerance limits: acceptable variation written into the quality agreement.
- Batch record: results linked to the lot number.
Questions to ask the factory
- Is filling by volume or weight, and why for my product?
- What is the filling room temperature and how is it monitored?
- How are drips handled and which nozzle is used?
- What is the net content tolerance and how are checks recorded?
- How is the line cleaned between batches?
Your bottle and your brand
Bottle choice affects filling accuracy: a narrow neck or dropper system may require slower filling. If you repack from drums yourself you face the same issues, so see our repacking guide. With a factory, ask for a fill trial using your bottle before the full batch.
FAQ
Does argan oil texture vary between batches?
A slight difference can appear with temperature, storage and batch, without being a defect. What matters is documented test results.
Does heating make filling easier?
Moderate, stable room warmth is fine; deliberately heating the oil harms quality and speeds oxidation.
Why do two identical bottles show different levels?
Small glass differences, air bubbles or a temperature gap. The declared net content is the reference, not oil height.
Is weight filling always better?
It is more accurate for real content but slower. The factory chooses by batch and bottle; what matters is documented checks.
