It is one of skincare's most confusing moments: you start a promising new product, and a few days later spots appear that were never there before. Should you bin the product? Not necessarily. What Is Skin Purging?

Certain actives — especially exfoliants that speed up cell turnover — push existing blockages inside your pores to the surface faster. The result: blemishes that were already on their way appear all at once instead of spreading out over weeks. This phase is temporary by nature and fades as your skin adjusts to the product.

When Is It a Genuine Breakout?

If a product clogs pores or irritates the skin, the spots are not a purge — they are a new problem created by the product itself. A texture too heavy for your skin type, or an irritating ingredient, can trigger blemishes and redness where there were none before.

Five Clues to Tell Them Apart

  • Location: purging happens in your usual breakout zones; spots in completely new areas point to a reaction.
  • Product type: purging is linked to exfoliating, cell-renewing actives. Moisturisers, oils and cleansers do not "purge" — if they cause spots, they probably do not suit you.
  • Duration: a purge improves within a few weeks; a reaction persists or worsens.
  • Appearance: purge spots are small and heal relatively fast; a reaction often comes with widespread redness.
  • Accompanying symptoms: burning, itching or swelling are never a purge — stop immediately.

What to Do in Each Case

If It Looks Like a Purge

Carry on calmly, spacing out applications if needed, and support your skin with a gentle routine: mild cleanser, good hydration, a drop of argan oil at night to nourish, and sunscreen in the morning. And whatever you do, don't pick at the spots.

If It Looks Like a Reaction

Stop the product immediately and return to your usual minimal routine until your skin settles. If irritation is severe or persistent, a dermatologist visit is the right call.

The Golden Rule: One New Product at a Time

Introduce each new product on its own, give it several weeks before judging, and patch-test first on a small area behind the ear or along the jaw. That way you will always know exactly what caused any change in your skin.
