When you request a freight quote for bottled argan oil, the price is not based only on what the order weighs on a scale. Carriers charge for the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, meaning the space the cartons occupy converted into a weight. Glass bottles packed in individual boxes with protective dividers often take up more space than their weight suggests.
Actual, volumetric and chargeable weight
- Actual (gross) weight: bottles, boxes, dividers, outer carton and pallet if used.
- Volumetric weight: length × width × height in cm, divided by a divisor set by the carrier.
- Chargeable weight: the higher of the two, the figure your per-kilo rate applies to.
The divisor varies: 6000 is common in air freight and 5000 with some express couriers. Get it in writing, because the gap can shift chargeable weight by roughly a fifth.
An illustrative example
These numbers are for illustration only, not prices or our factory specifications. Take a 40×30×30 cm carton holding 24 bottles of 100 ml in individual boxes, weighing 5 kg gross.

Why argan oil shipments are affected
- Thick glass, gift boxes and dividers add more volume than weight.

Cutting chargeable weight without risking quality
- Ask for the outer carton dimensions before production: a snug carton beats an oversized one full of filler.
- Standardise bottle sizes within each carton.
- Review individual boxes if they are purely decorative.
- Choose cartons that stack cleanly on the pallet.
